How Did I Become a Copywriter?
It started with a sip of champagne.
It was my birthday—not a particularly important milestone year, but it would become one.
As I sat across the dinner table from my husband (and the aforementioned champagne) that celebratory sip jolted something in me. It was a call to action, a career pivot I had been turning over in my head for a few months.
I let the champagne bubbles give me the courage to say it out loud—to my husband, but also, to myself.
I gulped and broke the silence. "I think I want to be a copywriter."
A beat.
I fully expected to hear him say something like...
"But you're so good with customers and you've managed teams. There's upward mobility there..." or, "I thought you liked community management, you're leading a certification on it soon."
He would have been right, I did like those parts of marketing, and I am great with customers. But I couldn't shake the feeling that this was something I HAD to do for myself.
Instead, my husband replied, "OK. What's stopping you?"
“There are no mistakes, only opportunities.”
I wasn't holding back from pursuing my dream because I thought I wasn't good enough. I held back because I thought it might be too late to learn everything I needed to know. How could I compete with full-time copywriters who'd been honing their trade for years? I doubted I would ever have enough time to get to the level of "real" copywriters.
But that just wasn't true.
I'm so glad I trusted my gut.
Since 2018, I've had the pleasure of learning from and working with incredibly brilliant marketers—copywriters who've passed down tried-and-true copy dogma as well as the wisdom to know when to bend the rules.
I am proud to tell people that I'm a copywriter.
It's an honor when a business uses my words to spread their message and engage with their customers.
Copywriting isn't Words on a Page
It's knowing your customers, their fears and frustrations, their desires and achievements; what moves them closer to happiness and farther away from pain.
Because understanding not only where your customers want to go, but where they've already been...
That's what gets you down in the trenches with them.
